Best 5 Online Grammar Checker Tools
Grammar checker tools are everywhere on the Internet. Which one will you need to improve your writing skills and check for common mistakes?
Writing academic papers is not easy, and one of the most important aspects of writing is grammar. If you do not have someone to proofread your writing, you will need a grammar checker tool. There are many to choose from, and each one has its specific features and integrations. You will have to decide which one is best for you. I have decided to list five for our students.
Price
Many of the grammar checker tools on the market have free basic services. If you want more than the basic packages, you will have to purchase a subscription to get advanced features. Some come with monthly, quarterly, or yearly packages where you can save a bundle of money. I strongly suggest you try several tools before you make a purchase.
In the cloud or on your computer?
Grammar checker tools come in two forms, one that is online and in the cloud or one that is downloadable and does not need an Internet connection. Typically, online tools come with considerably more features and support more integrations. If getting a good Internet connection is a problem or too pricey, you may want to look into getting one that downloads on to your computer.
Grammarly
This is by far the most popular grammar checker tool out there. It is used by millions of people around the world. You can use Grammarly via the free web interface, browser extension, mobile app, or desktop app. It is one of the fastest programs out there and likely the most accurate. A common writing error is misplacing or leaving out commas. Grammarly quickly alerts you of those errors. The premium version will give you feedback and suggestions to rewrite awkward sentences. If you use Word or Outlook on a Windows 10 device, you can also install the official MS Office integration. And for Mac users, there is a Mac OS integration available.
Details about Grammarly’s pricing model:
- Monthly Plan — $29.95 per month
- Quarterly — $19.98 per month
- Annual — $11.66 per month
Ginger Online
This grammar checker tool is a widely-used alternative for beginners. While it may not be as accurate as Grammarly, Ginger’s intuitive interface and some side writing features are worth trying. You can use the Ginger grammar checking tool for free with limited autocorrects each week, but you will have to get the paid version to enjoy all the features without limitations. This software’s tools include a grammar checker, sentence rephrases, word prediction, and more. Ginger also features one of the best translation tools (up to 65 languages) for writers who aren’t native English speakers. You can integrate the app across several platforms, Windows, Mac as well as iOS devices and Android users. Best of all, it has an in-browser window making it easy to check your grammar before you send that paper to your professor.
Details about Ginger’s pricing model:
- Monthly Plan — $29.96 per month
- Annual Plan —$12.48 per month
- Two Years —$9.99 per month
WhiteSmoke
WhiteSmoke’s accuracy is comparable to Ginger, and it has many compatibility and writing features. WhiteSmoke has been around for a while and is still widely regarded as one of the most trustworthy online proofreading platforms. Also, there is a desktop version that can is downloadable. You may integrate it into your browser for perfect web grammar connection, and it works with Microsoft Office products as well. WhiteSmoke claims that their translation tool supports full translation for 55 languages, that’s a little fewer than Ginger Software. However, it uses a self-improving system that enables it to improve as you use the software. It also has a plagiarism tool that can scan billions of pages for matching texts to your draft. WhiteSmoke recommended to anyone who is looking for a less expensive alternative to Grammarly.
Details about WhiteSmoke’s pricing model:
- Chrome Extension — $8.33 per month
- Essential Package — $10.00 per month
- Premium Package —$13.33 per month
- Business Package —$22.99 per month
PaperRater
PaperRater is easy to use. Go to their website, and copy and paste your paper, check a couple of boxes and click submit. The downside to PaperRater is that you can only use it online. If you have a paper over fifteen pages, you will have to submit it in chunks of fifteen pages each. The three basic features in its free package are grammar/spelling checks, writing suggestions, and automated scoring. It is a quick and easy tool to use, but it is not the best tool on the market.
Details about PaperRater’s pricing model:
- Monthly Plan — $14.95 per month
- Yearly Plan — $7.95 per month
OnlineCorrection
OnlineCorrection.com is a free online grammar tool that is fast and easy to use. It is enjoyed by students and professional writers, alike. Very much like the other grammar checker tools, OnlineCorrection provides proofreading and editing checks for grammar mistakes, spelling, errors, and stylistic issues. It does have a feature that allows you to select which English dialect you are writing in, American, British, Australian, New Zealand, and South African. It works well with essays, articles, and other types of documents. There is no app to download and must be used while you are online. However, this product is a free-to-use and comes with no enterprise pricing fees to worry about. It does not rate as high by consumers, as do the first three products in this review.

None of these tools will write your paper for you, but if you are a serious student, you should seriously start using these tools. Grammar checkers can lessen your workload and save you some embarrassment. Plagiarized and grammatically wrong work is never accepted anywhere. If you want to improve your English, to make your work errorless, and to get rid of some copied text, using a grammar checker is kind of mandatory.
Lastly, be on the lookout for discounts that these companies occasionally offer, they could save you some hard-earned money.
