Weekly Reflections – Child of God
There once was a missionary who worked with the people of Mexico. One of the techniques he used was to have an individual look into a mirror and state, “I am a child of God.” One woman he was working with broke down in uncontrollable tears when it was her turn to “come to the mirror.” She kept repeating, “I am a child of God. I am a child of God. I am a child of God.”
It seems that she was raised by an abusive father and subsequently married a man who was also abusive to her. Things were very difficult for her. But in this instance, she went home and told her husband, “I am a child of God and you can no longer treat me the way you have been treating me.”
He was taken aback but also touched by this new strength coming from his wife. The next Sunday the two of them attended church together, perhaps for the first time.
The Bible is filled with this concept. You can read it in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. No other religion makes this claim.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27
“And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:18
How powerful a concept this is. It impacts and affects everything about us and our lives. How meaningful is this concept to you?
Do me a favor this week. Look into a mirror and recite the phrase, “I am a child of God.” And then see that happens!
Blessings and peace,
