Dressing with Dignity

Dressing with Dignity

Providing a Pleasing and Attractive Appearance

There was a time in America when Christians put on their “Sunday best” when going to church. Today, we see all manner of clothing attire at church. This is not a judgment statement but an observation. The act of dressing appropriately holds significant importance. It reflects one’s respect for oneself, others, and, ultimately, God, or at least it should. Through modest and well-maintained attire, Christians aim to present themselves in a pleasing and attractive manner to their fellow members of the family and outsiders alike.

Dress codes are found everywhere in society. You have to wear appropriate attire to be admitted to the state Capitol offices and to observe the legislature from the gallery. My gym has a dress code for what is appropriate attire in the gym. No boots, no bare feet, no cutoffs or blue jeans, and you must always keep your shirt on. Wearing black to a funeral is still proper attire but even that observance is heeded less and less. Wearing gowns at graduation is a tradition that has lasted over a thousand years.

Appropriateness for Occasions

Within the financial means available to the family, it is essential for each member to possess clothes suitable for various occasions. Whether it be for worship, work, social gatherings, or leisure activities, wearing the proper attire demonstrates a sense of reverence and understanding of the importance of each situation. Furthermore, clothes should always be clean, pressed, and in good repair, reflecting a commitment to presenting oneself in the best possible light.

It is crucial to avoid clothing that may be deemed sexually provocative when in public. This principle stems from a deep respect for the sanctity of the human body and a desire to uphold the moral standards of both the individual and the family. By adhering to modesty in dress, Christians contribute to a culture of purity and respect.

Furthermore, good school clothes should be reserved for their intended purpose. Wearing them for play or work may lead to unnecessary wear and tear, which can financially strain the family. By establishing this distinction, families can teach responsibility and good stewardship of resources.

Maintaining Decency at Home

Lounging around the house in underwear is discouraged, as it may create an atmosphere of immodesty and disrespect within the family unit. Even in private spaces, encouraging a standard of modesty fosters mutual respect and consideration. Parents should refrain from deliberately appearing nude in front of their children, especially the opposite sex. This practice ensures that children grow up with a healthy understanding of modesty and respect for personal space boundaries.

In the family, the wife/mother typically holds the primary responsibility for ensuring that small children are appropriately dressed. However, it is imperative that all family members, regardless of age or gender, participate in maintaining a standard of modesty and respect in their attire. This collective effort serves to reinforce the importance of this aspect of Christian living.

There was a time when I once owned a rental property. The renter complained that the electric bill was too high. I stopped by the property to see if something was wrong. It had never run high electric bills in winter. I took my teenage son along with me. I never went over there by myself. A young woman answered the door in her underwear. I kindly asked her to put some clothes on before entering the house. I was very glad he was with me so I could not be accused of acting inappropriately.

My investigation concluded that the reason the electric bill was so high is that both the front and back doors were open. The storm doors were closed but the main doors were open to allow light in. The children did not want to turn the lights on because their father was complaining that the electric bill was too high so they decided to let light in by opening the doors.

The Bible provides good guidance on modesty and virtue, emphasizing the inner beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit over external adornments. Verses such as Genesis 3:10,21, 1 Timothy 2:9, and 1 Peter 3:3-4 underscore the significance of modest dress and virtuous character. The Proverbs 31 woman is celebrated for her strength, dignity, and industriousness. Her scarlet and fine linen garments symbolize her dedication to her family and her community. Through her example, we are reminded that modesty and respect for one’s appearance are inextricably linked to the virtues of strength, dignity, and integrity.

Remember, dressing appropriately from a Christian perspective is not merely a matter of outward appearance but a reflection of one’s commitment to virtue, respect, and reverence for God.
